Course Programme
The training course includes slide presentations, workshops and practical
sessions. You will receive the book 'The Chailey Approach to Postural Management' prior to the course, and you will gain more from the course if you are able to read at least some of this before attending. The course will focus on the Chailey
Levels of Ability, their use as an assessment tool, the evidence base
for postural management, and the design and use of the Chailey equipment.
Day One
Introduction - An introduction to postural management, including anatomy
and terminology.
Levels of Ability - A presentation of the normal development of postural ability in lying, sitting and standing.
This is followed by a practical group session to ‘feel through’ the Levels of Ability and
to consolidate the information from the first session.
Assessment and the Levels of Ability – Introducing the assessment chart. Using video,
this session will use observation of movement and your knowledge of the Levels of Ability to complete
an assessment chart.
Work stations - Three practical sessions running in parallel: using the assessment charts with a
video; a practical session on measuring X-rays; and a session on analysis of deformity.
Day Two
Linking assessment findings with clinical reasoning.
Biomechanics - Using assessment information to define and prescribe appropriate support in
order to influence a client’s posture and promote postural and functional ability.
Planning a postural management programme - Discussion session based on findings from workshop sessions.
Fitting and adjusting equipment - A practical group session to develop the skills required to fit and adjust equipment correctly.
